Joseph Cahill was born in New York City in 1976. When he was ten-years-old he sang two seasons in the Metropolitan Opera which included a production of Tosca starring Placido Domingo and directed by Franco Zeffirelli. This experience warped him for life. He later attended Alfred University in upstate New York where he studied glass-blowing and lithographic printmaking and in 1998 was awarded a Fulbright Grant to move to Prague to work under famed Czech surrealist director Jan Svankmajer. After two years spent completing Svankmajer’s feature Otesanek, Svankmajer lent Cahill his studio to make his own first short film Okenka. Okenka brought Cahill to film festivals all over the world including Rotterdam, where he met the Brothers Quay (who became close mentors and friends) and where an audience member magically gave him the funding for a second short film. Cahill remained in Prague for almost nine years, during which time he wrote the script for his first feature The Night Fisherman. In 2004 he teamed with veteran producer Ben Barenholtz (Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, Miller’s Crossing, Requiem for a Dream) to produce the film in Prague for HD Net Films in New York. When that fell through in 2007, Cahill moved to Paris where he married his French wife and had a baby. In 2008 he started working with Arthur H on visuals for his latest album L’homme du Monde. Together they created a 26 minute short film based on the album (which aired on W9), as well as a “making of” documentary about the recording of the album, and numerous mini-clips which were distributed virally. Cahill and H continued working on the official clip for the single Dancing with Madonna for which they created the anti-superhero “H-Man” for whom they are currently creating a Sci-fi television series for Steamboat and Lobster Films in Paris. Cahill created the sets for Arthur H’s latest concert tour, served as metteur-en-scene for the performance, and designed most of the merchandising sold at the concert. In 2009 Cahill directed Emily Loizeau’s official clip for her single Sister from her new album Pays Sauvage. It was selected as M6’s “clip des clips” and features a wide array of French musical talent including Olivia Ruiz, Moriarty, Thomas Fersen, David Hermann-Dune, Jeanne Cherhal and Vic Moan. Most recently Cahill has completed a new short film, Sleep Now, a psychological horror about fear and crêpes.
